Åberg Wins second PGA TOUR title to climb Rankings

By Josh Carr On February 17, 2025 13:00 UTC

Ludvig Åberg claimed his second PGA TOUR title with a one-stroke victory at the Genesis Invitational, propelling him to fourth place in the 2025 European Ryder Cup Rankings on 619.53 points.

A final round 66, including four birdies in his final six holes, was enough for the Swede to finish one clear of Maverick McNealy to become the fourth European winner on the PGA TOUR in five weeks following Sepp Straka, Rory McIlroy and Thomas Detry.

The 25-year-old has moved to fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings as he bids to make Luke Donald’s 2025 European Ryder Cup team, following a victorious debut at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy.

"It was awesome," Åberg told CBS. "It was a great fight. Obviously, the golf course is tough but felt like I was in control of the ball flight all day and really proud of the way that I finished, it was really cool.

"The [par] putt on 12 was big because I think at that point the lead was at 12 [under] and it was a putt to stay at eight. I made it, which was nice, then made a couple of birdies.

"It was so much fun coming down the last few holes trying to win a tournament. It really is a special feeling."

Starting the final round three strokes off the pace, it looked like Åberg’s race was run when McNealy raced to the front of the pack following a run of nine birdies in his firth 13 holes.

However, a bogey at 14 followed by four consecutive pars saw the American set the clubhouse lead at 11-under-par.

A birdie blitz from Åberg on holes 13, 14 and 15 pulled the Ryder Cup star level and when he found the par five final hole in two, he needed just two putts to secure victory at the iconic Torrey Pines.
