December 14 2021 marks the sixth anniversary of the Ryder Cup being awarded to Italy and host venue Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.
Italy will be the seventh nation in Europe to have hosted golf’s greatest team contest when the Ryder Cup is held there in 2023, following in the footsteps of the England, Scotland, Spain, Ireland, Wales and France.
Six years ago, Franco Chimenti, President of the Federazione Italiana Golf, saw his long-held dream become a reality as Italy was awarded the Ryder Cup for the first time.
With less than two years to go until the next Ryder Cup, Gian Paolo Montali, General Manager of the Ryder Cup 2023 Project has provided an update on the progress being made in Rome.
“Six years ago, we set a number of objectives which we are all working hard alongside Ryder Cup Europe to complete, such as the opening of the new course, pylon removal and the creation of new roads, which is necessary for the impending arrival of more than 250,000 people,” he said.
“We have managed to convince the different departments of government and parties across the whole political spectrum to work by our side in bringing this project to life. We have 21 months to go where we will carry out a number of Ryder Cup-related events, including golf for children, golf for women, golf for social inclusion and the Road to Rome, ahead of the Year to Go next September.
“Next year, the two Captains will come to Rome for the symbolic tee shot that will signal one year to go until the 2023 Ryder Cup. We have a lot of work still to carry out, and it certainly won’t be easy.
“We promise to give the same commitment and the same rigour that we have shown up to now in order for this to not just become a template for future event organisation, but to be an iconic event for Italy.”
