Two weeks, two epic playoffs.
Just one week after an eight-hole playoff at the Travelers Championship, fans were treated to yet another thrilling finish, this time via a three-man, five-hole playoff for the Rocket Mortgage Classic title.
And while American Troy Merritt and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann entered the final round tied for the lead, it was Australian Cam Davis who became this week’s marathon victor, parlaying an chip-in eagle on the 71st hole in regulation into a playoff spot and eventually, his first PGA TOUR win.
For Merritt, the week represents another solid entry in his 2021 resume, despite narrowly missing out on his third TOUR title. In addition to leading a strong American contingent on the leaderboard, Merritt’s T2 finish is his fourth Top 10 since May. His showing in Detroit moves the Boise State alum up a whopping 20 spots in this week’s Ryder Cup ranking, from 61 to 41st.
While the Top 12 remained static, Jason Kokrak and Max Homa made waves within the Top 20, moving up one spot each to 15th and 18th, respectively. Just outside that bracket, Georgia’s Kevin Kisner jumped three spots from 24th to 21st following a T8 finish at Detroit Golf Club.
Rounding out the week’s big moves are Brandon Hagy (up 10 spots to 59th) and Hank Lebioda (up 11 positions to 75th.
