Day 2 foursomes preview
7:35 a.m. Rory McIlroy/Tommy Fleetwood vs. Justin Thomas/Jordan Spieth
Fleetwood Mac will be back at it again. They took down the strong tandem of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, 2 and 1, on Friday morning, and now they'll face another experienced American pair, Thomas and Spieth. They went 3-1 together in Paris in 2018 and posted a 1-1 record two years ago at Whistling Straits. With the U.S. facing a massive deficit, they'll be looking to use their experience and camaraderie to start the Americans' day off in the right direction.
7:50 a.m. Ludvig Aberg/Viktor Hovland vs. Scottie Scheffler/Brooks Koepka
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's the mentality European captain Luke Donald seems to have. Europe swept foursomes on Friday for the first time ever; therefore, he's going with the same four pairs for Saturday's foursome matches. Aberg, in his Ryder Cup debut, recorded a 4-and-3 victory with Hovland over Homa and Harman. This time, they'll be going up against Scheffler, the world No. 1, and Koepka, who recorded a half-point together Friday afternoon in fourball. A few late heroics from Jon Rahm prevented Koepka and Scheffler from winning outright, but they showed grit throughout their match, so maybe the tides will turn Saturday morning.
8:05 a.m. Sepp Straka/Shane Lowry vs. Max Homa/Brian Harman
Lowry and Straka took down Collin Morikawa and Rickie Fowler on Friday morning, but 24 hours later, they'll face Ryder Cup rookies Homa and Harman. Their Ryder Cup debut didn't go the way the Americans hoped, falling to Hovland and Aberg. However, Harman and Homa are both world-class putters, which can be a lethal tool in match play. Harman also showed he has the stones to be successful in front of the European fans when he won The Open earlier this year. Though that wasn't the case Friday morning, he's likely itching for a bounce-back performance on Saturday with Homa.
8:20 a.m. Jon Rahm/Tyrrel Hatton vs. Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay
With three hole-outs and a 33-footer for eagle to close his first day at Marco Simone, Rahm had an all-time Ryder Cup performance, and that began by notching Europe's first point of the week with a 4-and-3 win over Scheffler and Sam Burns. This time, though, Rahm and Hatton will start their day by facing one of the U.S. Team's most successful pairings, Schauffele and Cantlay. They suffered their first foursomes loss in either a Ryder or Presidents Cup on Friday morning, bringing their overall record to 5-1-0. It's hard to win them all, but based on Cantlay's and Schauffele's prior success together, the two friends will be expected to get back in the win column Saturday as the U.S. aims to climb back into contention.
