The Ryder Cup made the long journey to Oban today, as the town came out to celebrate the success of their homegrown golfing hero, Robert MacIntyre.
MacIntyre, a rookie in Rome, was just one of three Team Europe players who remained unbeaten over the three-day event, and he was delighted to bring the trophy to his hometown to give people the unique opportunity to see this iconic trophy up close.
The Scot spent the day visiting schools throughout the town and meeting a number of young fans who have followed his rise from a local hero to star on the international stage.
Speaking at a Civic Reception held in his honour at Oban High School, MacIntyre said: “It was great to be in my hometown today meeting and talking to school pupils, and I am so pleased to be able to bring the Ryder Cup to Oban today."
"Being a part of Team Europe and competing in the Ryder Cup was a lifelong ambition for me, and I am very proud of this achievement. Not that long ago, I was just like all of the children who are here today, and I hope that seeing the Ryder Cup in Oban can inspire everyone to believe that, no matter where they are from, they can achieve their dreams if they work hard enough."
"Oban was a fantastic place to grow up and is a brilliant town to live in, and it will always be home to me. I’m proud to continue to promote the town wherever I go, and I’ll keep doing that when I’m playing in America next season.’’
Provost of Argyll and Bute, Councillor Maurice Corry, who hosted the civic reception in the afternoon, said: “It was a pleasure for us to welcome Robert today. He has achieved much already in his short golfing career – two wins on the European Tour, top ten finishes at the Open Championship and a top 15 in his first appearance in the US Masters.”
“We’re very proud of Robert’s achievements, and the fact that he is such a vocal ambassador for his home town of Oban, helping to promote the wonderful community spirit in Argyll and Bute on the world stage.”
Much of the day was spent with children and golf fans taking the chance to have their photograph taken with MacIntyre and the Ryder Cup, but the 27-year-old was also able to attend various local events, including officially opening a fantastic new outdoor wooden obstacle course at Park Primary School.
MacIntyre had the chance to catch up with some of his former high school teachers and have a chat with pupils, before enjoying time with the members of Glencruitten Golf Club where he took up the game as a young boy.
MacIntyre now takes a well-earned rest over the Christmas period, before launching his 2024 season in January.
