ROME – Team Europe only needed a half-point.
And U.S. player Max Homa was taking an unplayable on Marco Simone's final hole.
With the Americans' Ryder Cup hopes potentially moments from being extinguished, Homa dropped in the gnarly rough right of the par-5 18th green and sized up his new challenged: He needed to get up and down from 46 yards, or else he'd tie the hole with opponent Matt Fitzpatrick and the Europeans would win yet again on home soil.
Homa chipped it 7 feet past and after Fitzpatrick missed his birdie try, Homa stepped up and drained the par save to get a point and extend the clinching moment.
