Louis Anceaux (FRA) and Rocio Tejedo (ESP) lead the race to qualify for the 2023 European Junior Ryder Cup Team.
12 junior (U18) players will be chosen for the European team that will compete with the USA in Rome from 26 to 28 September ahead of the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup.
Three girls and three boys will automatically earn spots on the team through a season-long qualifying ranking. Eligible players score points for their performances at selected international amateur championships across Europe.
The remaining six players will be selected by captain, Stephen Gallacher (SCO).
The German Boys’ & Girls’ Open marked the fourth qualifying events for European team hopefuls. The tournament, played annually at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot, is one of the biggest on the junior calendar in Europe.
Tim Wiedemeyer (GER) was the star of the week on familiar ground. The German junior, who helped his country to the European Boys’ Team Championship title at the same venue in 2022, convincingly defended his title with a five-stroke victory. The win moves Wiedemeyer, who has represented the Continent of Europe twice in the Jacques Léglise Trophy, up to fourth position in the boys’ ranking.
Peer Wernicke (GER) moved up into second position in the ranking, and into the automatic qualifying spots, with a runner-up finish at St. Leon-Rot. Sean Keeling (IRL) held onto third in the ranking despite a disappointing T60 finish in Germany.
Rocio Tejedo (ESP) continued her exceptional form last week, adding yet another victory to her resume this season. The 16-year-old now has two wins and two third-place finishes in the four selected qualifying events played so far. With each player’s four best point scores counted, she is almost guaranteed to remain in the automatic qualifying spots when the ranking concludes at the end of the summer.
Nora Sundberg (SWE) and Savannah de Bock (BEL) currently sit second and third in the girls’ ranking. However, Andrea Revuelta (ESP) and Meja Örtengren (SWE) are less than a point behind in fourth and fifth positions respectively.
The coming weeks will see many points on offer with The R&A Amateur and Women’s Amateur Championships taking place, as well as the ANNIKA Invitational for the girls.
