Detry into automatic spots while Power and Smith record victories

Thomas Detry moved into the second automatic qualifying place on the World Points List after finishing runner-up to the biggest mover of the week, Ireland’s Seamus Power, at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Rounds of 64-67-68-67 saw the Belgian finish one stroke behind Power in the PGA TOUR event to climb 10 places into fifth on the World Points List with 29.81 points, as he chases a Ryder Cup debut at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, Rome, Italy.

However, it was the triumphant Power who made the biggest leap of the week, as his victory at Port Royal Golf Club saw him move up 87 places on the World Points List and into eighth place with 23.99 points.

Three consecutive rounds of 65 and a closing 70 saw the Irishman finish one clear of Detry to collect his second PGA TOUR title.

"This course was always going to be a tale of two sides," Power told Sky Sports.

"You're going to make some birdies on the front and I knew it was going to be really hard coming in. I made hard work of it in the end, but I'm delighted to get it done.

“The first win was amazing but to be able to win again is fantastic. It's a completely different feeling (to the first win) but it's just as special. I play a lot of tournaments and it's going to take a little while to sink in.

“I’m so proud of myself.”

Meanwhile on the European Points List, England’s Jordan Smith moved within touching distance of the automatic qualification places as his wire-to-wire Portugal Masters victory saw the now two-time DP World Tour winner climb 16 places into sixth with 604.86 points.

And the Englishman’s ball-striking masterclass at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, Vilamoura, Portugal, is sure to have caught the eye of 2023 European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald as rounds of 62-67-62-63 saw Smith finish at a staggering 30-under-par, three clear of his nearest challenger Gavin Green.

Smith said: "It’s just amazing. It’s been a long grind for those five seasons, just pushing it out and finally getting over the line today. Over the moon.

"I knew that today and every day I’d have to get off to fast starts and make sure I made lots of birdies.

"I knew there would be a lot of good scores out there and guys trying to catch me. Gavin was trying to get there and he was getting closer and closer but I managed to hold him off.

"It was a little bit (like match play). When we got down the last five or six holes, it got to that sort of stage. I knew he was four shots ahead of the guy in third so it was just between us two.

"It’s nice getting the first win but then it’s great knowing you can do it again. It’s more down to the pressure I put on myself to get the win and now I’ve got my second one we can push on for a couple more."

As it stands Jon Rahm (850.00 points), Shane Lowry (835.00 points) and Rory McIlroy (721.50 points) would claim the three automatic qualifying spots on the European Points List, with Robert MacIntyre (33.83 points), Detry (29.81 points) and Adrian Otaegui (27.15 points) currently sitting in the top three positions on the World Points List.

The 2023 Ryder Cup will take place between Sept. 25 – Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, Rome, Italy.
