HEALTH & SAFETY
We hope you enjoy your day out watching our sport; part of that involves understanding the sport and the part you play in it. Please take care.

Every endeavour is taken to ensure that the risks to the health and safety of all those who come to spectate at the Ryder Cup are minimised as far as possible. Given the nature of the sport, there is, however, always the possibility that you may find yourself in a position where a ball will leave the ‘playing area’. This guidance is designed to help you understand the nuances particular to the game of golf and what measures we put in place to try to reduce those risks.

‘FORE!’ – Fore is the standard warning shout in golf. Etiquette dictates that all players who hit an errant shot towards other people would shout ‘Fore!’ If you hear a shout of Fore when spectating on the course you should crouch down and try to protect your head and face.

Rope lines – The course will be set out in advance with a rope line that marks the ‘playing area’ of the course. Spectators should not cross this rope line unless specifically told to by a Marshal/Event Personnel. Likewise there may be other ropelines around the course and the same rule applies – Spectators should not cross ropelines unless specifically told to. Other barriers may also be in operation which should also not be crossed.

Players/Caddies Pointing and Marshals with Flags/Boards – In the modern game the professionals (and indeed amateurs) can hit the ball very long distances and sometimes you may not be able to hear a shout of Fore. Where possible you should try and focus on shots being played on the hole you are spectating on (and those around you) and look out for other signals that a ball may be travelling in your direction (i.e. Tee Marshal (located behind the tee box) with YELLOW paddle board will point in direction of ball flight.)

Course Layout and Scorecard – On each day of play there will be a Draw sheet, which outlines the first tee times of all the players. This draw sheet will also often have a copy of the course layout and scorecard on it so you can see hole information.

Course Awareness – At the Tees there will be boards which have the hole numbers and for events with TV Towers these sometimes display hole numbers too. Together with the scorecard/course layout, these will help you to work out where you are and therefore understand any potential risk from stray golf shots. Remember that errant shots may come from other holes that are near to your location.

Golf Shot Variables – While players will be aiming to land the ball on the fairways and greens there are a number of hazards on the course designed to make this more difficult. Primarily these include the Rough (longer grass to the side of fairways and behind greens) and Bunkers (sand). Depending on how a professional’s (or amateur’s) ball has finished in these hazards there may be an increased chance that next shot is hit offline/too far.

Weather - Wind can also be a factor and will affect the flight of the golf ball. Whilst the players will attempt to use their skills to allow for this, it is much harder to control the flight of the ball on a windy day, especially when the wind is blowing across the hole. Please be conscious of the wind direction. Particular attention should be taken when spectating on the All-Star Match on Wednesday and Junior Ryder Cup on Thursday. Amateurs are often from a sporting background hence, while they may have the strength to hit the ball hard and far, they may not have the ability to keep it straight. We encourage all our spectators to pay particular attention to their own safety on these days. Please be aware at all times when spectating and maintain vigilance.
